The key to a perfect wedding might not be what you expect


There is no doubt that you and your family will spend hours, probably hundreds of hours, over months and months to plan the perfect wedding. Taste-tests of cakes and frostings, stationery samples, countless visits to venues (or venue websites), and plenty of nights spent pulling your hair out. It will all be worth it! However, all this effort won't be the thing that makes your wedding day perfect. Let me explain…

1. Preparation

We touched on the first part (1. Preparation) above, and you likely have a sense of what is left to do to make sure you are prepared. Preparation is the foundation of your wedding day; it can only be as grand as the foundation can support. However, preparation comes with its downsides. The more you prepare the more opportunities there are for things to go wrong. This leads us to part 2.

2. The Unpredictables

The Unpredictables are exactly what they sound like; all the things that happen during (or right before) your wedding day that you couldn’t possibly plan for. The bride breaks out in a rash the night before the wedding, the DJ can’t find your first dance song, or the groom tries to put his own ring on the bride's finger (all things I’ve witnessed). Sometimes the unpredictables have cataclysmic effects on the wedding day, sometimes they are the fondest memories, and sometimes nothing unpredictable happens at all. But The Key can overwhelm even the worst possible unpredictables.

3. The Key

The Key to a perfect wedding, if you had to get one thing right it would be this, your attitude. The one thing that all “perfect” weddings I’ve been to have in common is that the bride and groom had an attitude of “no matter what happens, this will be a perfect wedding”. The mantra that my wife and I repeated all throughout our wedding day was, “as long as we say ‘I do’ and leave with a signed marriage certificate, it will be a perfect wedding!”

I know it sounds cheesy, but please believe me! 

There were plenty of things that went wrong or not according to plan at our wedding, but our decision to not let them ruin our day is what saved everything. Looking back, the only thing we would change is that we would have hired a videographer (seriously! The videographer didn’t think to hire a videographer…).


There is very little that we are in control of in this world, but one thing we can control is our attitude. If you can nail that, you will have a perfect wedding guaranteed!
